The emergence of Digicel into the market in 2007 had significantly boosted the mobile penetration rate in Papua New Guinea. This was due to Digicel bringing mobile networks to remote and rural parts of PNG which previously were not connected via any mobile network. Though market penetration had gone from 1.6% in 2006 to 50% in 2016, this was poor in terms of International standards.
Telecommunications Analyst Vanessa d’Alancon stated that 2016 showed a mobile penetration of 50% (45.5%), compared to 2006 which was at 1.6%.
”The result was a substantial increase in mobile penetration from 1.6% in 2006 to 49% by early 2016.” (Market Research, 2016).
